Biden Warns Major Policy Gains Are Vanishing Under Trump

In his most significant public speech since stepping down and disclosing his cancer diagnosis, former President Joe Biden warned that many key achievements of his administration are being quickly eroded by the current Trump administration.

In his most significant public speech since stepping down and disclosing his cancer diagnosis, former President Joe Biden warned that many key achievements of his administration are being quickly eroded by the current Trump administration. On Wednesday, President Biden took the stage at the highly anticipated Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) conference, where he captivated an audience of thousands of HR professionals with his insightful thoughts and vision for the future. He highlighted that the policies he and the congressional Democrats worked tirelessly to implement, especially those concerning both international and domestic issues, are being reversed. “So many of the things I fought hard for, that I believed truly changed our country, are changing back at an alarming pace,” Biden stated, reflecting on his extensive experience in policymaking both in Washington and abroad.

Even Out of Office, Biden’s Guidance Is Sought

During his recent speech, Biden disclosed that he is still in contact with various European leaders, particularly regarding military and diplomatic issues, who are encouraging him to reengage in global matters. While he indicated that he is providing advice behind the scenes, he emphasized that he is officially retired from public service.  "I’ve been receiving calls—though I can't share details—from several European leaders who are asking me to get involved again. However, I'm not doing that; I am offering guidance," he stated.  He noted that these discussions primarily focus on significant international accomplishments achieved during his tenure, particularly concerning NATO's expansion and the ongoing support for Ukraine.

NATO Expansion and Ukraine Support in the Spotlight

Biden shared his thoughts on his efforts to enhance and solidify NATO, pointing out that Finland and Sweden became members during his leadership after Russia's attack on Ukraine. He expressed worry that the current administration is shifting its focus away from global partnerships. "We made significant strides in strengthening NATO. Now, I'm receiving calls... from leaders across Europe," Biden remarked. He cautioned that the existing policy direction might revive concerns about isolationism and undermine the global order.

Key Domestic Policies Rolled Back

Biden chose not to mention Trump by name but expressed criticism towards the policies of the GOP-led Congress. He pointed out that the recently introduced “big beautiful bill,” which entails tax reductions and new spending on immigration, is reversing many of his economic and social goals. During his speech, Biden remarked on how the latest legislative measures bring about substantial tax cuts and significant reductions in programs such as Medicaid and SNAP, effectively dismantling essential elements of his administration’s agenda.

What is the White House’s response to this?

The current administration at the White House responded emphatically to President Biden's statements. In a detailed statement, spokesperson Anna Kelly asserted: “Due to the efforts of President Trump, NATO allies have committed to a significant defense spending increase of 5%, marking a pivotal moment in our collective security. Furthermore, the measures taken under his leadership have significantly diminished Iran's nuclear ambitions, effectively neutralizing potential threats. Additionally, his presidency played a crucial role in rehabilitating our nation’s reputation and influence on the global stage.”

This perspective underscores the administration's belief in the positive impacts of former President Trump's foreign policy, emphasizing the importance of international alliances and security measures that were put in place during his tenure. The administration contends that these actions have not only fortified relationships with allied nations but have also contributed to a more stable geopolitical environment.

Personal Note Amid Health Disclosure

At the age of 82, Biden shared details about his prostate cancer diagnosis in May. He spoke about his experience with cancer while highlighting his dedication to public service and family. He mentioned that he reaches out to all his grandchildren daily, expressing his commitment to staying engaged in their lives and his work. Additionally, he expressed a desire to be remembered as a good father. This occasion was one of his rare public appearances since January, following his announcement of health issues.
