Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams delivered a statement performance Monday night, rebounding from a difficult season opener with a 28-6 victory over the New York Giants at SoFi Stadium.

Stafford threw four touchdown passes and finished with 327 passing yards as the Rams controlled the game on both sides of the ball. The performance provided a sharp contrast to Los Angeles’ 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the opening week of the 2026 season.

The victory also gave the Rams their first win of the season and brought attention back to a team that entered the campaign with significant expectations.

Stafford Finds His Rhythm

Stafford completed 22 of 31 passes and recorded a passer rating of 131.3 against New York. His four touchdown passes included two connections with newly acquired wide receiver Davante Adams, who quickly became one of the central figures in the Rams' offensive performance.

Adams finished the night with eight receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns. His biggest plays helped Los Angeles consistently move the ball downfield, including a 64-yard reception that pushed him beyond 100 receiving yards before halftime.

Stafford's other touchdown passes went to running back Kyren Williams and tight end Terrance Ferguson, giving the Rams a balanced scoring attack.

The quarterback also moved higher on the NFL's career record lists during the game, passing Philip Rivers for sixth place in career touchdown passes.

For a veteran quarterback entering another season in Los Angeles, the performance reinforced his importance to the Rams' offense.

A Different Rams Team Emerges

The offense was only part of the story.

Los Angeles' defense held New York without a touchdown and limited the Giants to two trips inside the red zone. Cornerback Trent McDuffie intercepted a pass, while the Rams generated consistent pressure and kept the Giants from establishing an offensive rhythm.

The game also marked the return of defensive star Aaron Donald, who came back to NFL action after his previous retirement. Donald recorded three tackles in his return and provided an additional storyline on a night when the Rams looked considerably more complete than they had in their opening game.

The Giants faced an additional challenge when quarterback Jaxson Dart left the game with a knee injury during New York's opening offensive series. The Giants subsequently struggled to generate sustained offense against Los Angeles.

What the Win Means for Los Angeles

The Rams now sit at 1-1 after two very different performances. Their opening loss raised questions about the offense, while the victory over New York showed how effective the unit can be when Stafford has time and his receivers create opportunities downfield.

Head coach Sean McVay said after the game that the team was at its best when all three phases played together, highlighting execution and collective performance rather than focusing solely on individual statistics.

The Rams still have a long season ahead, and one dominant victory does not settle questions about their consistency. However, the performance against the Giants provided an important early response after their disappointing start.

Stafford's four-touchdown outing, Adams' 195 receiving yards and Donald's return combined to make the Rams one of the week's most closely watched teams. As the season continues, the question will be whether Monday night's performance represents a temporary rebound or the beginning of a more consistent version of the Los Angeles team.
